The Adventures of Pinocchio (Illustrated)By C. Collodi

The Adventures of Pinocchio is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi, written in Florence. The first half was originally a serial in 1881 and 1882, and then later completed as a book for children in February 1883. It is about the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio (pronounced [piˈnɔkkjo] in Italian), an animated marionette; and his poor father, a woodcarver named Geppetto. It is considered a classic of children's literature and has spawned many derivative works of art, such as Disney's 1940 animated movie of the same name, and commonplace ideas such as a liar's long nose.

From Publishers Weekly
Innocenti's luminous interpretation of Collodi's tale carves the action out of 19th century Italian landscapes. Clearly shown as a mocking marionette, this Pinocchio races through cobbled city scenes and then throws himself prostrate at the personor fairywhom he has most recently wronged by his hasty, thoughtless behavior. And when he becomes a real boy, the transformation is resounding: left slumped on a chair is the body of a puppet; readers may marvel that what lies so lifeless in that scene was the source of so much trouble earlier on. Enchantment reigns in the pictures, each a perfect elaboration of the text. Innocenti and Collodi are equally at home in a place where puppets have life beyond human hands, and where souls may die and live again, resurrected by the power of love. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3 Up Librarians are often faced with the dilemma of adult patrons who frequently request this book for their children, expecting the Disney version, and, when given the original, reject it as too frightening. But the original version is filled with events which are considered frightening fare; it has frequent violent turns of fate and a jerky, wild plot. This newest version will probably come close to a happy medium between Pinocchio as he really is and as people want him to be. Both illustrations and text emphasize the buoyant, irresistible, and innocent verve of Pinocchio, who is never deterred by the often morbid events around him. The full-color illustrations, both full- and half-page, mostly feature Pinocchio, who here is a cute little marionette with a faint resemblance to his Disney doppelganger. The prose is conversational and would make a nice read-aloud choice. Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. This retelling of a classic story raises a question: does modernizing and truncating the story to popularize it, lose the essence and charm of the original? The answer, of course, is, "It depends on how it's done." The classic, illustrated by Attilio Mussino, is 310 pages. For his picture-book-size, 96-page version, the editors have cut episodes, minimized details, and abbreviated the dialogue. Eliminated are such elements as the Land of the Busy Bees and notes to the reader, and nicknames have been updated (the Lovely Maiden with Azure Hair is now the Blue Fairy). The emphasis is on the magical aspects of the tale, and the heavy moral tone of the original has been replaced by a more child-friendly approach. The new full-page, turn-of-the-century-style illustrations, in watercolor, ink, and paint wash, are lively, spirited, and appealing. Certainly, the editorial changes bring a smooth flow to the story, and the attractive new look, with large print, will entice the young audience to whom Pinocchio's escapades most appeal. Isn't that what retellings should do? Julie Cummins

it is a delightful book, zesty fun informative. I haven't finished due to ...life. but more than halfway through and as a cognitive sort i have found this information useful, not profound or deep, but does lead one to think outside the box by being eclectic enough stray from beaten paths but not with enough wizadry to roam chaotically about pointing attention to itself. The book provides a rich trove of neuroscience info packaged with whim and slyness. It also lacks the dogmatic sententious nose-kite attitudes of some authors.

This book isn't about "hacking your brain" at all. What it really is is an overview of neuroscience, presented as 100 different topics which talk about how the brain works. Ever wonder how our brain figures out which direction sound comes from? Or how we pick out patterns in chaos? Or how we construct our vision of the world? Not only does it explain it in a very accessible fashion, but it gives hyperlinks to things online which have mp3s or jpegs which help demonstrate the point so that you can verify for yourself that it's how it works.

I'm only 2/3 of the way through the book but thought it would be worth posting a review before completing it for one reason. The reason is that all the many links found in the book do not need to be entered in by hand. The authors recently put the complete list of links on their web page. This makes it a lot more enticing to go off and explore illusions and support information.I liked the idea of the book, and when I started reading it, it seemed somewhat unengaging. Somewhere after the first 10 hacks or so that changed. I guess I started developing a feel for what it was all about. It's sort of textbook-ish, but nevertheless very interesting. Sort of like a lab manual and you are the lab.I think other reviewers have given a pretty fair idea of what it's about, so I'll only make a few comments.I think it's worthwhile reading their comments sprinkled among the references. There's some very good info there and suggestions about further reading.A real show stopper item is how we use the external world as a database to help us see. That's a real twist. See the J. Kevin O'Regan web article, Hack #40. That reminds me. Some of the illusions on the web, particularly those on change blindness, are a little tricky. A good illustration is in this article. There's a section (single line actually) called "slow motion". You probably won't notice what happens in the animation until it stops, and you try to restart. Suddenly it jumps out at you. My point is that sometimes you have to fidget awhile with the computer. This is not a fault of the book.Another show stopper (to me at least) is the experiment discussed in the chapter on integration, Hack #61. It appears that language is necessary to integrate information from our senses. In this case, geometry and color. As of this writing, it's unfortunate the publisher hasn't yet put some of the book online. There are a few items I would like to search for that I did not highlight and cannot find in the index. The index is, however, quite good.Another good current read on the mind is "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell.P.S. I'm looking for the story about the pilots.

This book is very detailed and very insightful, it can become dry at times, but that's because it has so much information that is needed to understand such a great topic.

I got this to use for some fun "games" for a college course. It takes some sorting through but it was useful.

Very interesting so far...I've not put it down but will give a more in depth review after I've read it...I am really enjoying the manner in which the different hacks have been explained and the exercises that go with each...Perhaps bc I'm on a huge "awareness and presence kick" lol but it is holding my attention and I'm 5 and a half hours in reading this book

There are some interesting thingies to explore in here. Nothing too surprising for me, and not as many of the oddities and sensory trickeries as I was expecting (your mind can do such weird things). Also, the visual appeal is somewhat lacking, on the inside of the book, or maybe that is just me.Otherwise though, still an interesting book. factual info, which is always appreciated.
