Buy this book for the video.I've bought lots of drawing books over the years. I've given most away to people I don't like. I keep books by Lee Hammond and Carrie Stuart Parks because they do the best job of explaining how to draw, and to learn to draw you really need a good book.The big difference between the two is that Hammond uses a grid to help you figure out proportion and Parks uses a measuring aid. Both methods work well and are complementary.But even the best book is insufficient. You need to SEE HOW THEY ACTUALLY DRAW. And for that you need a video. It's like the difference between reading a book on golf and watching a golf video.And this book has a 24 minute video.

An excellent absolute beginner's book. [Just exactly what I was looking for.] Explains how to shade, shape, and properly proportion every facial feature and then how to put them all together in a well done 'portrait' -- using only a photograph. A must have for every beginner intending to draw faces. Be warned, however, that this book teaches to draw 'lifelike' in an ILLUSTRATIVE genre, as opposed to 'REALISTIC' [or 'REALISM']. An example of the difference would be a Norman Rockwell style drawing [illustrative] and any of the old masters [realistic]. This book teaches illustrative, Norman Rockwell style drawing.So this book not the only beginner's book you should have if 'lifelike' and 'realistic' together is what you really want. You should also have 'Drawing on the right side of the Brain -- Betty Edwards and How to Draw What You See -- Rudy de Reyna.Also, I bought this book used hardcover from 'melisasandy' in Amazon Marketplace and although it was advertised as good condition, it came in very excellent condition. If you are going to buy any books used, this is the third book I bought through 'melisasandy' and all arrived in excellent condition. I recommend you buy your used books from them when you can..

This is a tough review for me. I have watched Lee Hammond on Youtube to get of inspiration and a bit of guidance as I try my hand at learning to draw. There are others I use as well. This book seemed like it would be a good addition to my library. Especially with the added DVD of instruction. And that's where it fell apart. The DVD really adds nothing of value to this book. Instead you get the DVD version of something readily available on Youtube in which Lee shows you how to make a value line from darkest to lightest, and then demonstrates how to draw a sphere using her mechanical pens and her tortillions. All needed knowledge, but that's where it stops. There is no real demonstration of how she puts the "Hammond blending technique" (that's how it's billed) to use in an actual creation of a portrait from a photo. Very disappointed. Get the book if you must, but leave the DVD in its holder. You'll gain nothing from viewing it.

I started drawing portraits of my daughter from photos after losing her to cancer last year. Then I was given the name of this book and author and ordered it. It arrived the day before we were flying to Mexico and I read the whole book on the plane. I found a store in Mexico that sold the needed supplies and the first portrait I did was really good. Everyone liked it and thought I had potential. I have since recommended the book to others. With time I have improved in my drawing and I think this is a great book for those who want to draw very nice portraits. And I say if I can do it, anyone can. Go for it!I have read a super-critical, long-winded review of this book that told me that I will never be a great artist using this book. I say so what! I draw beautiful portraits that are pleasing to my subjects and myself. Since I am 71 years old I don't intend to be the "professional" that the long-winded reviewer pretends to be. People are happy with my portraits and so am I. I am very grateful to Lee Hammond for this book.

I have her original "draw lifelike portraits from photographs" and was very disappointed in this one it contains a lot of duplicate info and instructions as the first one. strictly for beginner. The book shows some pictures and instructions, of ethnic and some new drawings I was hoping that the CD would show more detailed instructions in these but it was her basic instructions. I would suggest the first book for beginners although this book would also be good either one. She does very beautiful work and will be very helpful. Had to return book.

I've read through the book and I immediately related to and appreciated her techniques and insights, as well as how she expressed them.Highly recommend for beginning and returning artists!

I still have a long way to go but am enjoying the journey.I would recommend this to anyone that has an interest in honing your skills of drawing portraits. Love it!!!

This book is truly wonderful ! I have several art books and this one is by far the best. Lee Hammond does and excellent job of teaching without bogging you down with page after page of yammering. She is to the point and the improvement I've seen in my work as I went through this book is amazing. I personally don't think the reviewer who bashed this book knows what he's talking about. He mentions Betty Edwards book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as an excellent book... I have that book ! I made it 25% of the way through doing the exercises and such and then had to quit because my joy and enthusiasm had been sucked right out of me with all the droning on and on. I want to learn how to draw not get a PhD in Art Psychology. After that experience I left drawing for over a year. When my desire to draw returned I bought this book from Lee Hammond and I've been encouraged ever since. I'm thrilled with the improvement I've made and how much fun Lee makes learning. If that reviewer knows so much I didn't quite catch the names of his books. ?

About the Author

Stephanie A. Hallock is an associate professor of political science at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland, where she chairs the college’s International Education Initiative. Her primary work has been in the area of global curriculum development and study abroad, consulting and presenting in Bulgaria and the United States. These experiences led to her current exploration of various pedagogical approaches to promote student engagement, both in the classroom and larger communities in which they live. In 2009, she received a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching and leadership. She received her B.A. from Roanoke College, an M.A. from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from the University of Miami (FL). She began her teaching career at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida.

You may have heard that the 20th century was the warmest in 1,000 years, or that the 1990s were the warmest decade in at least 600 years. Perhaps you also know that these claims originated in peer-reviewed science, which produced a temperature graph showing a hockey stick shape.
These claims are, in fact, bogus. It was obvious from the start that they were at least dubious, because when professor Michael Mann stated that his studies showed that "there was no Medieval Warm Period," the fact of a MWP had already been established, beyond dispute, by direct observations made by the French social historian Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie.
Why, then, did Mann's hockey stick persuade so many people? A.W. Montford, an English accountant, does not answer that question - except indirectly, by showing that the people persuaded did not look at it carefully - but he does explain, in detail, why the hockey stick was junk science.

Improbably, the story reads like a murder mystery, a combination of locked room puzzler (how did Mann and his associates get a hockey stick where it could not have existed?) and courtroom drama (as Sherlock Montford presents the forensic deconstruction of the trick).
Montford, who conducts a blog mostly about climate, called Bishop Hill and used his accounting skills of patience and precision in dealing with heaps of data to tell a connected and, often, thrilling story.

The Seagraves assert that the Japanese imperial family, along with Ferdinand Marcos, every American president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush, and numerous sinister figures on the American hard right have been tainted and in many cases utterly corrupted by the loot. Postwar efforts to recover and exploit the treasure, according to the Seagraves, involved murders, dishonest deals and cover-ups. Readers who want to examine the full range of sources for this controversial account are referred in the book to the authors' Web site, where two CDs containing "more than 900 megabytes" of supporting documentation are available. But a paradox affecting conspiracy histories such as this one is the authors' frequent insistence that the malefactors have suppressed relevant evidence. Conceptual difficulties of this sort make it impossible for the lay reader to judge this book's credibility, even while one is swept up in the high-intensity story the Seagraves tell. FYI: The authors claim that in consequence of their revealing the existence of the slush fund and its resulting "global network of corruption," they have received "veiled death threats."

I didn't choose the text -- it was selected by another faculty member who generally teaches the class. I would choose it myself, however, based on the good "fit" with my students. It gives great "real life" examples that help them see how these concepts work in today's businesses. They enjoy the examples, since they know the businesses. About the Author
Robert A. Pitts is professor of Strategic and International Management at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania since 1986, Robert Pitts has authored a wide range of successful strategy texts, articles, and case studies during his 27 years of teaching. His teaching and research focus also includes the field of corporate finance. Prior to Gettysburg, he taught for 13 years in the management department at Penn State University. Pitts has been a visiting professor at the Sasin Graduate Institute in Bangkok, Thailand and IMEDE Management Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, among others. Before entering academia, he worked in industry as an Investment Analyst for Prudential, a Plant Manager in Thailand, and as a US Peace Corps volunteer. Pitts holds degrees from Harvard (DBA), Columbia (MBA), and Yale (BA).

David Lei received his PhD at Columbia University in Marketing/Management of Organizations and is now an Associate Professor of Business Policy at Southern Methodist University. His area of expertise is in Strategic Alliances, Corporate Strategy, Manufacturing Technology, and Global Communication. About the Author

Dr. Robert D. Hisrich is the Bridgestone Chair of International Marketing and Associate Dean of Graduate and International Programs at Kent State University and president of H&B Associates, a marketing and management consulting firm he founded. About the Author
Jeffrey Wolf Green has been called the founder of Evolutionary Astrology because he first started to lecture on the revolutionary astrological paradigm in 1977 after receiving a dream from the spiritual master Swami Sri Yukteswar, Paramahansa Yogananda’s guru. In that dream the entire paradigm of Evolutionary Astrology was conveyed to Jeffrey. This was the first time in astrology’s long history that a specific paradigm was realized that allowed for an understanding of the evolutionary progression of a Soul from life to life. Jeffrey lectured all over the world on Evolutionary Astrology from 1977 to 2001. He established Evolutionary Astrology schools in a number of countries and wrote three books on Evolutionary Astrology. The first of these, Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, volume one was published in 1984. It has been in continuous print ever since and has become one of the all time best selling astrology books. Translations have been made into French, German, Dutch, Chinese, Bulgarian, Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages. The second volume, Pluto: The Soul’s Evolution through Relationships was published in 1998 and has been in continuous print. A third volume, Essays in Evolutionary Astrology: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, was published in 2010. Essays was compiled by his daughter Deva Green from transcriptions of workshops Jeffrey gave over the years. It covers topics that are part of Jeffrey’s Evolutionary Astrology paradigm that were either not covered in depth or in some cases at all in his original two volumes. Since starting his original Pluto School in 1994, Jeffrey had many EA students, a number of whom are now professional EA astrologers. He personally counseled over 30,000 clients in his lengthy career. This exposure to so many Souls from so many different backgrounds and orientations allowed him to come to the deepest possible understandings of the nature of the Soul. He communicated these insights through all of his teachings. In 2008 his daughter Deva Green, took over her father’s work. She established the Jeffrey Wolf Green School of Evolutionary Astrology website, and created the EA School’s Evolutionary Astrology Council who assist Deva with the School’s mission of disseminating Jeffrey’s original work around the planet.
