DEATH SENTENCE by Joe Sharkey is a fascinating read.It is the 1970's true crime story of a father named John List who murders his entire family and goes on to create a new personnae and life afterwards.The story is well researched and skillfully written. It provides a lot of insight into List's character and psyche. Although quite informative in that regard, it is a chilling look at a sociopath's skewed thought processes and reasoning. At the end of the tale you're still left with a man who shows no remorse and remains self-justified in the killing of his entire family.Sharkey has done an amazing job of breathing new life into an old true crime case the public has only known on the merits of its surface details. Kudos to the author for a job well done!

I was hesitant in buying the book Death Sentence, having already seen several documentaries, Forensic Files, and America's Most Wanted on this story, thinking what more could I learn. I decided to give it a shot and soon found out that I made an excellent choice. Despite seeing the aforementioned TV shows, I learned a lot about the List tragedy from this tome. The book is well written with no writing or grammatical errors and was hard to put down. I have always had an interest in the List case, but after this reading experience, I may check out other writings by Joe Sharkey.

I don't read much true crime; it always feels too emotionally difficult. But this one is so famous, and takes part in nearby New Jersey, and I knew much of the actual events.The book recounts actual events as we see that List acted premeditatedly and planned those horrendous murders far in advance; he was emotionless as he established a time-line for his actions. This was so chilling--his cold heartless steps as he determined how he would kill each family member.There is close focus on John List, and we learned so much about his strange ways. He worked as an accountant, but had difficulty holding his jobs. Nevertheless, his dreams (and those of his first wife who had a brain disease) were grandiose. They bought homes beyond their means. He was extremely devoted to the Lutheran Church, and was an officer of the Church administration; he read from the Bible every night. He wore a black suit and tie always, even when mowing the lawn.List seemed to be a loving father, albeit overly religious and strict, and also curiously bland as a human being. He often could be kind, gentle and considerate. He didn't look like a killer, and didn't act like one--but there was still an abundance of clues that John was peculiar. The most upsetting of situations: He actually sat his three children down and told them that he planned to murder them. The oldest, 16-year Patty was terrified but had no course to follow for help; she confided in the director of her theater group, but it didn't change the situation. It is appalling that he announced his murderous intents, and he still wasn't stopped.The story of John's "rebirth" with a new name is also amazing. So many people found him likable, and yet, his hidden past didn't raise any flags. He never spoke of his earlier days in any way -- all he would admit to was that he had a wife who died. He married again—but his inability to retain employment was an issue.This book presented so much to think about. I really enjoyed this story of a strange man who committed the most horrible of crimes, without remorse but with many justifications and explanations. A perfect study of the dark extremes of the human heart.

This is a very full telling of the murders of five family members. The actual crime is not too emotionally hard to read (I was dreading this part) because it is kind of clinically told without embellishments of horror. John List is the focus throughout: the family situation, the educated, professional accountant whose qualifications enable him to find excellent jobs, but is fired from every one, the compulsion to keep everything in secret compartments, and the religious man who knows doctrine but has no faith.The story flowed beautifully. What a great researcher and author.

Great detail into actual crime information that I did not know before. Of greater interest is the story of the drama within the family and how John List moved on with his life without a hitch. Wow! Something that can never be understood is how did that guy live with what he has done for 18 years?

This is a good book about a terrible man. I appreciate the details and facts that the author gathered about the tragic and terrible events.

I have always been intrigued with the John List murders. This book gives very good insight into the family life prior to the murders. Most importantly, it provides a rather detailed account of John List's life after the murders as his alias Robert Clark. The only fact that wasn't listed was that the glass in the ballroom ceiling was a Tiffany original. I always thought this compounded the tragedy, as John List as an accountant, surely could have sold the house with the valuable ceiling and solved his financial difficulties, had he been aware of its true value.Good read, well researched. Photos included.

The author drew me into the story as though I was there as a witness. All true crime enthusiasts need to get this today.

Mr Schubach writes a story that digs deep into the collective unconscious and mythic background and creates memes and themes that resound with anyone who has ever read the Norse myths.I truly love the way Mr Schubach makes these timeless stories live again by putting his own spin on them. Every time the Valkyries rush to battle, I hear Wagner in my head. Mr Schubach deftly stirs the heart while spinning a tale that excites and delights. The reader thrills to Kara's extraordinary courage and weeps over total devotion to those she loves.Edited to add: After the second reading, I am still astounded by how accurately Mr Schubach interprets the Poetic Edda. The poem called "Voluspa", for example, portrays Ymir as the primordial being from which everything was created, the origin of the Aesir and even the first of all the Jotun. The Bellows translation says, Of old was the age when Ymir lived; Seas nor cool waves nor sand there were; Earth had not been, nor heaven above, But a yawning gap ("Ginnungagap"), and grass nowhere.After reading Erik Schubach's Valkyrie series, if one were then to read the Poetic Edda, it would all sound definitive, accurate, and familiar. He gets the details right and makes them sound plausible.The Edda goes on to say that Ymir is altogether evil (by Odin's definition). Mr Schubach portrays this as a creater dissatisfied with his creation and determined to wipe it all out and start over. (cf Genesis chapter 7).The resonances which come from race memory, ancient mythology, and literary tradition make these books so much more rich and detailed than they would be without them.I know I'm the only reviewer who raves about the connections to Nordic mythology, but every new book amazes me with the depth and detail of his research. So many authors grab a mythological theme or a few characters and then make up their own details, but Erik Schubach researches and makes sure he gets the details right.The reason I always say so much about this is because it makes the books so much more enjoyable for me to read. Every time I read a new Valkyrie book, I get online or dig out some of my mythological tomes and look up details that are new (to me) or unusual. And EVERY SINGLE TIME, Erik Schubach has gotten all the details exactly right!Do you know how unusual this is? How many authors go to this much trouble to create accurate resonances with race memory, literary tradition and architypes that we all have vague memories of? These details enhance the stories so much and enrich my enjoyment so deeply that I just can't stop raving about it.

This had to have been a record for quickest time to make me cry and get frustrated, but I will admit it the tears and frustration was worth the read! Through out the journey Erik has taken us on with the Valkyrie Chronicles I know I have come to absolutely love each and every one of the characters. This installment is no different! I did not want to put it down (after the small fit I had in the beginning) even when I was at work! The new race introduced keeps your hackles raised as your root for our heroines and with each book you get to see new sides and even more depths to your favorite characters. And now there's a new character I can't wait to know about... NEXT PLEASE... RAUGH!

I am so happy I received the corrected download because I would've been upset at missing book four. It was worth the wait. "The Uniting" of the previously warring factions to defeat a threat to all worlds. The sense of community developed throughout the races showing peace can happen if you choose it. I've read many series that start to fizzle out a few books in but that is NOT the case with this series. Seventy Two Hours is easily the best book in this series so far, and I can't wait for the fifth book!This book is action packed and will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time. One of my favorite parts though was seeing some things fully revealed that were just hinted at in previous books.

I Loved this book. For the most part you are reading the point of view of our most beloved characters Kara and kate, which put a smile on my face being so reminiscent of book one in the series. As for the plot, Asgard is under a great threat yet again but not by whom you would believe. Who is this new threat and will the great valkyrie of Asgard be able to stop them. You must read to find out, you won't be sorry.

Once again in his fourth book Erik Schubach has done an excellent job! The characters where as always humorous, well rounded and relatable. All of his Valkyrie books have been nonstop action packed and kept me guessing. Buy his books they are worth every penny you spend.

Everything Erik writes is great-not a single bad novel yet- this series is fantastic sci-fi with heroic women (with super-heroic powers) battling to save their alien culture and the planet Earth too

Erik has done it again! "Seventy Two Hours" is another worthy addition to the Vakyrie Chronicles! Non-stop action, a tight story line, and surprises galore. Everything we have come to expect from this great storytaler. The introduction of two new races was inspired and lends itself to further adventures. Looking forward to more adventures. About the Author
Sarah Skwire attended Wesleyan University, where she received a BA (with honors) in English and was a member of the coed literary fraternity Alpha Delta Phi. She later received both her MA and PhD in English Literature from the University of Chicago. In addition to coauthoring WRITING WITH A THESIS (with her father, David Skwire), she has published a variety of creative work as well as articles on subjects such as chronically ill seventeenth-century women poets, medicine in "All's Well That Ends Well," the "German Princess" scandal of the seventeenth century, and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Before coming to Liberty Fund, Sarah taught at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and at The Ohio State University. Her current research is on the subject of money and early modern poetry.

David Skwire taught for 25 years at Cuyahoga Community College and has degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Cornell University. In addition to being the author or coauthor of all editions of WRITING WITH A THESIS, he also has coauthored STUDENTS BOOK OF COLLEGE ENGLISH (Longman), now in its tenth edition.
