Her life is thrown into an uproar, however, when in rapid succession (1) she loses her job, (2) Frederick--the ex- -decides he just might want her back, (3) her loving yet high- maintenance younger sister announces that she's pregnant, (4) she meets an immensely attractive (and already involved) architect named Patrick, and (5) she wins a contest to create her dream garden at the famous Chelsea Flower Show. To Althea's surprise, not long after she meets Patrick, his secretary/lover Topaz, a twentysomething with an aerobicized body and expensive tastes, runs off with Frederick, leaving Patrick suddenly single. Then, to Althea's additional surprise, Patrick announces that he finds her as fascinating as she finds him. It may be a little book but it stands tall. "Make Your Bed" written by Admiral William H McRaven is filled wth life lessons. He tells us personal stories and also stories of other American heros. You will shed a few tears but will also rejoice and laugh out loud. You will feel pride in the accomplishments of these brave young men. The name of the book comes from the very first thing a prideful person does each day, he makes his bed. Interestingly, while in captivity Saddam Hussein did not make his bed. This book is a fleshed out story of what the Admiral told a graduating class at the University of Texas. If you want to change the world start off by making your bed. Other suggestions are: Find Someone to Help you Paddle, Life's Not Fair--Drive On, Failure Can Make You Stronger, Measure a Person by the Size of His Heart, Never Ever Quit. Inspiration is the word that pops into my mind as I tell you about Admiral McRaven's book.

There are many "self-help" books on the market that contain solid information. However, General McRaven's Make Your Bed comes across as refreshingly different from those books by well known self-help gurus like Dr. Phil or Tony Robbins mainly because the anecdotes he uses to illustrate his ten key points are gleaned from his experiences as a Navy SEAL. I read this little book in one sitting and plan to buy copies for my children. In a nutshell, McRaven says that life is tough, but meeting challenges with discipline, determination, a positive attitude and the support of others will most often lead an individual to a meaningful life that will inspire others.

I got this as a kindle book and starting reading it before hitting the sack. I read the entire book straight through, underlining my favorite passages, and it is so well written! Lots of simple but sage advice and this book will be on my annual re-read list. Great advice from a great hero!!

This book is an excellent short read, full of great life lessons for anyone. Although the examples are from a military life, it is not a military book. I will gladly recommend this book to all of my kids and fourteen grand kids !

I saw the author on Fox news, and was intrigued. I am certainly not SEAL tough, never was, but anyone can incorporate this into his life. If you are slightly better today than yesterday, and slightly better tomorrow than today, your life will be more meaningful and impactful. I will be purchasing additional copies as gifts.

Outstanding book! Easy, enjoyable read intertwined with important reminders about life. Adm. McRaven uses his time in Naval Special Warfare to background these life lessons, but, doesn't use his service as a SEAL as a self promotion tool.

Dr. Catherine Arnott Smith is an Associate Professor in the School of Library & Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a PhD in Library & Information Sciences/Medical Informatics and an MSIS in Information Sciences/Medical Informatics (University of Pittsburgh, 2002 and 2000 respectively), as well as master’s degrees in library and information science and American History/archives administration (University of Michigan, both degrees conferred in 1992). This book is wonderfully put together, and while the information could be a bit hard to digest for some, I think it be really useful as a resource for writing.The book covers a lot more of the philosophy of alchemy than the actual methods if I remember correctly, but that's perfect for what I got the book for, which was so I could slip little alchemic references into my writing.

The pictures are of great quality and the writing is superb, but the book binding is terrible. First, as you open the pages (mostly on the black pages) you will hear a tearing sound. This is the pages tearing from the sewing and glue. You will notice holes from the bottom of the page to the top where the pages meet the spine. Second, the bookmark ribbon is textured and leaves a nasty imprint on the pages. It would have been better if they had not sewn the ribbon in to begin with.As a book collector, I am less than impressed. If I had the money to get the Easton Press edition, I would. In the meantime, this one is going back. Taschen, you could do better.Best,Bruce

Very nice book, wish it were bigger though.

I spent a long time trying to figure out which version of this book (short, medium, or full version, basically) I would get. There has been a lot of confusion in these reviews, what with Amazon combining reviews for specific versions together and people leaving their review for the wrong version, and some of the versions being removed from Amazon, creating one jumbled commentary. Here are the two main versions I found:Version 1) FULL VERSIONPaperback: 712 pages $165.00 new $45.00 usedPublisher: Taschen (May 1, 1997)Product Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.4 x 2.1 inchesVersion 2) SHORTENED VERSIONPaperback: 575 pages $12.37 newPublisher: Taschen; 25th edition (August 2, 2006)Product Dimensions: 7.7 x 5.6 x 1.8 inchesI decided to go all out and get the full version, but at the used price. I have to say I was a bit disappointed, while the book is packed with fascinating information and images, I never thought to look at the size dimensions of this mammoth 712 page book before buying: 8 inches long! Basically just an inch or two larger than my hand's length. Think: the size of a guide book. I was so looking forward to this book largely for the artwork it has, which shows fine lines and details. But alas, most of the images aren't full page but half-page size, so imagine how small they actually are in a 8x6 inch book! Honestly, I felt the book, for my purposes, was not worth the $45.00 USED price. I was picturing a large coffee table sized book where I could pour over the artwork, rather than something of a pocketguide. Knowing how small the artwork and text is, I wish I would have only spent $12.37 and sacrificed the 200 pages for the sake of my wallet.I would recommend getting one of the two versions to anyone fascinated by spiritualism, symbology, archetypes, art from 1300s-1600s, and myth/folklore/magic.

There is so much info in this book. Many illustrations as well
