About the Author

Nicholas Hastings is currently adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology's Centre of Integrated Engineering Asset Management. He is also a consultant in engineering asset management for Albany Interactive Pty. Ltd.

Dr Hastings began his career with the British Army's Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, before joining the Department of Engineering Production at the University of Birmingham, where he completed his PhD in operations research. He then became Professor of Operations Research at Monash University (Melbourne) prior to joining the Queensland University of Technology. In 2006 he was awarded the Medal of the Maintenance Engineering Society of Australia / Asset Management Council of Australia for his contribution to reliability and engineering asset management.

This book was publish in 1982. Don't let that deter you. The book uses mathematical notation instead of a specific programming language for examples. Don't fear the math, this book is very readable. This book talks about pure functional programming and is about the theories behind it. It's pretty timeless as far as the content. Nothing in this book has changed significantly in the 32 years since it was published. I wish there were more CS books like this one.

The author utilizes mathematical notation rather than suffering through the inevitable inadequacies and limitations of any particular language (LISP, ML, Haskell, ..) However this actually simplifies the instruction, assuming the reader is familiar with set theory and the basics of formal logic.The illustrations are primarily of the kind familiar to anyone involved in computer science, such as parse trees, flowcharts, and schematics of memory allocation. There are also mathematical type signatures.Program examples include [very] infrequent ones in LISP, as well as occasional procedural examples given in antiquated-yet-adequate Pascal.For the purpose of general instruction this may well be unexcelled in the field.
